MEKCO Group Aviation Powers Inflight Entertainment and Sales with AirFi America
MEKCO Group Aviation is constantly searching for innovative ways to improve the passenger experience while keeping costs low for airlines and is leading the charge with their IFE and Connectivity division, AirFi America and the product, AirFi, a unique inflight entertainment (IFE) and connectivity solution.
Bill Utset, President and CEO of MEKCO Group Aviation, reveals how AirFi is changing the game for airlines by providing a one-stop solution for entertainment, onboard sales and messaging services.
AirFi's wireless IFE system allows passengers to enjoy movies, TV shows and other content while simultaneously serving as a point of sale device for cabin crews to sell food, beverages and duty-free items. AirFi allows passengers to use their own devices for entertainment, thereby reducing airlines’s IFE maintenance needs.
The system also includes in-flight connectivity with payment validation, crew and passenger messaging with global coverage. This cost-effective and scalable solution is perfect for various aircraft types, from large commercial planes to regional carriers. Traditional IFE systems come with high maintenance costs and complex installations, however AirFi Installation is quick and straightforward. An aircraft such as an A320 takes about 10 hours while a 777 requires just two days to complete, for example. Removal of AirFi’s units is even faster.
"Let's say an aircraft is leased and now it's time to return that aircraft back to its lessor," Utset says. "They can remove this system in a matter of three to four hours and be able to install it on another aircraft. So your investment moves with you — you don't leave it behind."
The AirFi unit is highly adaptable and lightweight, making it an ideal solution for various aircraft sizes. It can be installed in anything from a small Cessna 402 to an A350, as it weighs a mere four pounds. Thus, weight limitations are not a significant concern when incorporating the AirFi system, Utset says.
This flexibility makes it convenient for different types of carriers, such as regional airlines operating Embraer or ATR fleets. The AirFi system can be integrated with major airlines' services, allowing for a seamless entertainment experience. For example, a passenger arriving in Miami and transferring to a regional carrier can pause a movie they were watching on their first flight. Once they board the connecting flight, they can resume the movie where they left off. This convenience enhances the overall travel experience, regardless of the aircraft size or type.
The system boasts a 99.99 percent reliability rate and is monitored proactively to address any issues, Utset says.
Use is further streamlined because AirFi America collaborates with airlines to inform passengers about the availability and usage of on-board wireless systems. This can be achieved simply by placing an insert in the seat back or incorporating a QR code on the seat in front, Utset says. When passengers scan the QR code with their devices, they are directed to a customized verification system, designed specifically for that airline. The system features the airline's branding, colors and fonts, creating a familiar and personalized experience for passengers, he adds.
The AirFi system ensures crew awareness through visual cues, such as color coded lights, indicating the system's status. All software updates and maintenance are performed wirelessly, eliminating the need for manual intervention.
While on the ground, wireless updates allow for content changes, such as movie updates. For instance, if new movies are scheduled for release on May 1st, data is incrementally added from April until April 28th, but remains time-sensitive and doesn't take effect until May 1st, Utset explains. This streamlined process eliminates the need for additional personnel on the aircraft, as all operations are managed through a desktop interface.
AirFi's connectivity capabilities also enable passengers to send messages from the aircraft to people on the ground using the LEO system. Family members and friends can respond to these messages, allowing for continuous communication during the flight.
This interactive system can also benefit the flight crew, as it allows airline operations offices to send important notices to cockpit crew members, such as gate changes. For instance, if a flight is arriving in Miami, the crew can be promptly informed of any updates, ensuring a smooth and efficient travel experience for everyone on board.
Budget carriers seeking to reduce expenses and increase revenue find AirFi's flexible and affordable solution particularly appealing. With real-time data applications and easy installation, AirFi is a game-changer for airlines looking to gain a competitive edge in the market.
AirFi has already attracted more than 80 customers worldwide, with AirFi America managing sales and installations in North and South America.
With zero maintenance, rapid installation, and the potential for additional revenue generation, AirFi is becoming the preferred choice for airlines across the globe.
